Gar are a mysterious fish in Minnesota. The Mississippi River and it's tributaries
define Shortnose and Longnose Gar's nothern bondaries. While their numbers are small, there is enough
of a presence that they can be targeted with some level of sucess. They seem to be most common in shallow water and I think there
are a lot more around then you would expect. Look for them by dams near shore. They are
present in decent numbers in the Mississippi, St. Croix and Minnesota Rivers.
This Shortnose Gar was caught on a jig in the Mississippi. It was a lucky hooking since their bony,
hard beak-like mouth making them difficult to hook. One decent way to target them is casting a
free-line dead bait(no weight) and working shallow surafce water. |
