Yes, there are Piranha living in Minnesota waters. The one pictured here was caught in the
Mississippi River in Minneapolis and is one of the many reasons why it is not a good idea
to go swimming in the Mississippi. Piranhas are not native to Minnesota, and Piranhas like
this one are likely to once have been pets. It is unlikely that this tropical animal can
withstand Minnesota's harsh winters. However warm water discharges exist that could conceivably
act as a winter oasis. If Piranha can find sufficient winter shelter, it seems possible that
they would be able to establish a breeding population.
Minnesota Record: To my knowledge this is the largest Piranha to have ever been caught in Minnesota water. |
